GRAPHIC DESIGN

Web & Digital Marketing Consultant

There are three responses to a piece of design – yes, no, and WOW!.

Wow is the one to aim for.

Graphic Design. My career in design started in the year 1999. Looking back, graphic design turned out to be a kind of ‘key skill’ for me, providing access to and reinforcing all my later design disciplines. On this page I explain what graphic design is, what a graphic designer does, and how I apply my knowledge of graphic design on a daily basis.

Graphic design plays a huge role in the organization and transformation of messages. Within the Graphic Design arena, we are examining and experimenting with the ways in which we can communicate with visual languages.

The foundation of this segment is formed by the core subjects that I believe are valuable for a practice as a graphic designer: editorial design, image, typography and theory. I approach this area in a conceptual and playful way, using both analog and digital techniques.

An A4 with black text in the Calibri font with font size 11, which is what most people consider a ‘standard document’. But is that still the standard? Nowadays texts and documents are visually dressed in all kinds of ways; and that’s exactly what graphic design is all about. But what actually is a graphic design.

What do you think about a graphic design?

Officially, a graphic designer often takes care of the graphic design of printed matter and other physical products. Think for example of corporate identity printed matter (such as business cards, envelopes, letterhead, etc.) but also book covers, brochures, CD covers (remember them?), company clothing, promotional gifts and more. But; Since I started my graphic design in year 1999, websites and digital products have increasingly come under the heading of graphic design, broadening (and blurring) the definition. I myself count all my digital design work under Visual Design . Visual Design is a broader field that includes knowledge of graphic design, user interface design, user experience design , identity design and branding .fall under. Think of it as ‘graphic design deluxe’. Because digital design is often interactive, by definition other fields are involved, such as user-friendliness , scalability (in connection with the arrival of the smartphone) and interaction design . This extra layer of psychology is, in my view, required as soon as you start working with interactive design work.

A graphic design is – certainly in view of the developments in the current digital landscape – an extensive concept. There are many different types of texts and documents that lend themselves to graphic design, including:

Physical products:
– business texts , such as annual reports
– promotional materials , such as billboards
– printed matter , such as flyers , brochures , folders , posters , magazines and packaging

Digital products:
– websites
– social media posts
– online advertisements
– newsletters

A graphic design is inextricably linked with the typography and layout of a text or document. Graphic design creates a certain continuity between textual and graphic elements, which supports the message or purpose of the text. There are various graphic elements that you can use to visually dress up a text, such as use of color , fonts , font size, illustrations, photos , frames, areas and margins .

What are the goals of graphic design

Broadly speaking, there are three text goals that can form the basis of a graphic design: activating, informing and convincing. The text itself does not need to be adapted by a graphic designer, it mainly revolves around the purpose of the text. Graphic design allows you to further elaborate the message or purpose of a text and thus change the impact of a text. For example, a graphic design can be used to increase the readability, accessibility and attractiveness of a text. A text that is designed in a strict way looks more professional, provides variety in the document and is able to stimulate the reader’s curiosity.

What does a graphic designer do?

The field of work of a graphic designer has expanded greatly due to the digital developments of recent years. In short, a graphic designer is concerned with the graphic elements already mentioned and tries to steer graphically towards the (communication) purpose of the text. For this, a graphic designer immerses himself in the essence or message of the text and in the most important information. The text is ultimately structured and designed on the basis of this. In addition to the target group, the communication goal and the message of the text, the designer or designer must sometimes take into account certain wishes or design requirements that a client has.

What role does graphic design play in communication?

The key application of rules in graphics designs.

Graphic design takes over where words fail. Whether it’s eye-catching illustrations on websites or a great logo on products or printed matter, a good graphic designer specializes in creating a positive first impression on your customer base. In addition, graphic designs are universally understandable because they are independent of different languages.

Say it with color
Research indicates that customers subconsciously form a judgment within 90 seconds of seeing a product. Between 62% and 90% of that judgment would be based on color . These effects of color are extensively analyzed in the world of color marketing. For example, color can increase the brand awareness of your product or company and increase the customer’s memory capacity regarding your product or company. Further more, the use of specific colors is linked to different emotions. That’s why we recommend that you sit down with a graphic designer to think about which colors best apply to the corporate image you want to project.

Get over the writing
After choosing the right colors, your graphic designer will have to think about selecting the right font. Broadly speaking, fonts fall into two categories, serif fonts, also called “serifs”, and sans-serif fonts, also called “sans-serifs”. serif fonts radiate seriousness and confidence, while sans serif fonts look more modern and younger. Of course, a sans serif font can also be used to convey seriousness and confidence, and a serif font can be used for a young, playful organization. So be sure to pay attention when you select a font in consultation with your graphic designer.

Find your iconic logo
Just like the already mentioned graphic elements of color and font, an excellent logo contributes to making the right first impression. A logo allows your company to be recognizable without explicitly mentioning your company name. Here too, a graphic designer offers clear added value, as he has the right skillset to design a logo that stands out. When developing a logo, some “soft rules” apply, as is the case with fonts. First and foremost, keep it simple, as an overly complex logo can lead to ambiguity among your customers. It is best to limit your use of color to three colors. This ensures the chance that your logo is always correctly displayed on printed matter.

Style of the house
If your company were a person, your corporate identity would represent that person’s identity card. A house style simply comprises a number of rules about how you wish to visually profile your company to the outside world. In concrete terms, the identity card summarizes the elements already discussed, such as the use of color, fonts and logos, into one coherent whole. Such rules preserve the coherence of your communication and prevent misapplications of the created style.

Graphic design is thus the profession to create visual content and to convey messages. Graphic designers make use of images and typography, among other things. With this they try to meet specific needs of users. They apply visual hierarchy and page layout techniques. They also pay attention to how elements appear in interactive designs. Here are some compelling reasons why graphic design is essential. This is especially true for digital marketing.

Build your own unique identity or brand

A picture says more than a thousand words. This couldn’t be more true. Graphic design is important for any business. Especially if you want to make a positive and long-lasting impression as a company. Is it about spreading the message about your company? Then the design gets the attention first and then the words. Together they convey a powerful message. For example, in the Apple logo, there is not even a slogan. However, the design speaks better than words for the brand. See again the importance of graphically responsible design.

Improve sales
It’s no surprise that humans are visual creatures. That is why people are attracted to uniquely designed objects. To get the message across it is best to use quality designs.
